Aquarium of the Pacific

The Aquarium of the Pacific, located in Long Beach, California, is one of the largest and most visited aquariums in the United States. Opened on June 20, 1998, it spans a 5-acre site on Rainbow Harbor, directly across from the Long Beach Convention Center and near the historic Queen Mary. The aquarium is home to over 11,000 animals representing more than 500 species, all focused on the diverse ecosystems of the Pacific Ocean.

The aquarium features three major permanent galleries: the Southern California/Baja Gallery, the Northern Pacific Gallery, and the Tropical Pacific Gallery. These exhibits showcase marine life from kelp forests, coral reefs, and icy northern waters. Notable attractions include the Blue Cavern, a three-story, 142,000-gallon tank replicating the waters around Catalina Island; the Shark Lagoon, where visitors can touch rays and small sharks; and the June Keyes Penguin Habitat, home to Magellanic penguins. Other highlights include theLorikeet Forest, an aviary where guests can feed colorful lorikeets, and theSea Otter Habitat, which houses playful southern sea otters.

Over the years, the Aquarium of the Pacific has expanded its offerings with new exhibits and educational programs. In 2019, it opened Pacific Visions, a major expansion featuring a state-of-the-art immersive theater, art gallery, and interactive science exhibits focused on sustainability and the future of our oceans.

The aquarium is a non-profit organization and a member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), committed to marine conservation, education, and research. It welcomes approximately 1.7 million visitors annually and relies on a dedicated team of staff and volunteers to support its mission.
