Statue of Liberty
The Statue of Liberty, officially named Liberty Enlightening the World, is a monumental symbol of freedom and democracy located on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. Standing 305 feet tall from the ground to the tip of the torch, the statue was a gift from France to the United States, designed by sculptor Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi with an iron framework engineered by Gustave Eiffel. Unveiled on October 28, 1886, it commemorates the centennial of American independence and celebrates the enduring friendship between the two nations. The statue holds a torch representing enlightenment and a tablet inscribed with the date of the U.S. Declaration of Independence—July 4, 1776. Her crown features seven rays symbolizing the seven continents and seas, while broken chains at her feet signify liberation from oppression
